Summer work: Just watch these videos to the right (the two crash course videos). You are welcome to watch my podcasts below here, but they are not required. No IDs for this week.

1. Crash Course World History - Medieval World. John Green is a great author and a pretty funny guy that makes cool short videos. Here's a couple relevant to this week.
2. Crash Course World History - Ottomans and Venice. 3. Crash Course World History 2 - Disease |
Here I have included a number of video presentation files. You can use these resources (essentially very detailed and compact versions of our lectures in class) to catch up on material that you feel you missed or didn't understand, or to review concepts that may be weaker for you if you wish to.
Part 1 of this week's material discusses the social situation in Europe, namely feudalism and manorialism, the nature of subsistence living and the Spanish reconquista.
Part 2 looks at the 100 years war, it's effect on France and Britain, and how the need for money to fuel the war led to increasing centralization of the state.
Part 3 covers the War of the Roses in England and its effects on the monarchy, as well as the disastrous event that was the Black Plague.
Part 4 discusses how the black plague is best described by understanding the medieval mentality (which doesn't change dramatically until the scientific revolution). Because they could not explain phenomena, God became the answer for many processes.
The final section of the lecture this week talks about Pre-Reformation heretics (or proto-reformers depending on your perspective), the growth of individual christian movements, and the great schism within the papacy (when there was more than one pope at the same time).
